OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - Nuttin' But Nets

For only $10 you can purchase a bed net for a child and his or her family in Africa. You receive a certificate to give as a gift in someone's name (ideally, a child). These nets are saving lives by protecting kids on the African continent from malaria. A noble effort that offers families across the globe an inexpensive means to assist others in a real life and death situation occuring every day.

Some alarming statistics:
  • Every 30 seconds a child dies of malaria.
  • Every day 3000 kids die from this disease.
  • Malaria is the leading cause of death among children, claiming almost 1 million little ones.
  • You can help save lives for only $10 out of your pocket.

Please consider buying a bed net. A donation and certificate would make an excellent stocking stuffer and allow you to open the door to a conversation about charity and the plight of others in the world.

OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - Symbiot Sportback

This post is for anyone who is having trouble finding that perfect gift for the outdoor lover who already has everything but also likes to be the first one on their block with the latest and greatest toy or gadget.

The Symbiot is a new kind of backpack. It is so new in fact, that folks could just start buying them online this past week. You could literally be one of the first hundred or so people to be sporting one of these amazing backpacks ideal for hiking, jogging and general outdoor activity.

OWTK sees the Symbiot as a hip, new and fresh take on the small diaper bag model, but for the modern Mom and/or Dad on the go. Picture yourself hiking up to the top of a small mountain to get a pristine and perfect view of Pont du Gard (hey, that sounds familiar!). Your toddler is just a pace or two in front leading the way. Now picture yourself with a bulky traditional backpack haphazardly dangling off your shoulders or a diaper bag with a giant picture of Dora on it - doesn't feel right, does it? Now, picture yourself with the Symbiot Sportback seemlessly intigrated into your upper body. Like a second skin (with a water pouch!) the Symbiot allows you to bend over without having the contents of your pack crashing towards the back of your head (c'mon, we all have been there).

The Symbiot is more affordable and cooler than anything you will find at EMS, plus you have the added joy of giving a gift to yourself or another parent/outdoor enthusiast that they have NEVER seen before. Buy one today for only $39.99 or click here to read the Symbiot fact sheet

OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - Daycare/School Gift Ideas

The OWTK family has been dreadful in this category. We constantly neglect to consider gifts for our girl's daycare...and our mail carrier, spring water delivery person, trash folks...

Since we bought our first home five years ago and then had a child a couple years later, we have never gotten into the habit of buying gifts/giving money/and so on to the service industry individuals that positively impact our lives. Because we are now coming-to-gripes with our deficiencies in this area we have a Gift Guide post that may help all of us.

1)
Fruit and/or Cookie, Candy Baskets. Perfect for giving a thoughtful gift to the masses - ideal for schools, daycares, etc.

We are looking at this one from ftd.com

2) Lottery Sratch-n-Play cards. A 5 or 10 pack of these chances for big a payday may be the right gift for a mail carrier or exterminator.

3) Gift Cards to a convienence store (we have a local chain called WaWa that is amazingly popular with commuters).

4) Gift Certificates to a local pizza place and movie house.

Naturally, you want to consider the overall cost of this gift since many schools and daycare providers have numerous employees. You do not want to end up dropping $25 per person, well, unless your family can afford such an expense. OWTK certainly can not, but a $30 basket of goodies for the handful of teachers in the Tiger room might just be the perfect gift!

Back to Basics Toys - Archery Set

We received our replacement archery set from Back to Basics Toys yesterday and, like the first, it too was in miserable condition. Upon further examination of the first set, the toy is so incredibly cheap and poorly made. Kids will discard this overpriced contraption within days, if not sooner. If you are considering an kid's archery set for Christmas this year, you will want to look elsewhere.

Back to Basics Junk, err, Toys

When we arrived home tonight, one piece of our Back to Basics Toy order was waiting for us. It was this archery set.

The box was mangled and held together, in parts, with a lot of household quality scotch tape. It clearly had been purchased and returned before...maybe twice...before finding it's way to our front door! It was terrible looking inside and out. The Mrs. dialed up customer service to complain immediately. They told us they will send a new one...and to not even bother returning the one we have. That was an unexpected response.

Now, after seeing the archery set in person, we don't want one of them, let alone two. We will keep the crappy one, maybe give it away to charity, and return the newer one, once it arrives. Interesting business plan Back to Basics Toys employs, to just send out another toy without asking for the old one back. Good for customers mind you, but unorthodox.

OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - Musical Instruments

Don't buy toy musical instruments, I beg you! They are not that much cheaper than real junior/child sized musical instruments and they will break quicker and sound poor. Plus, if your child really takes an interest in the instrument, you will only wind up buying a real one anyway. Visit a music store, a big chain like Sam Ash or a local shop and talk to the people working there. Most likely, they are passionate music folks that can point you in the right direction. You and your child will be much happier for the effort. Trust me!

Some examples of real, pint-size drum kits (the coolest musical instrument you can buy for a little one):

Children's Drum kit - by Ludwig (a real drum company)
A full 5 piece kit with stool and drum sticks. Everything your child will need to start playing drums. Available in traditional black or the awesome wine red color.
On sale for $219.99 (down from $355) from Sam Ash

The $220 price for this Ludwig Drum Kit is on par with or cheaper than many of the First Act Drum Kits (First Act is a widely available toy instrument maker - available at all the big chains toy stores).

Smaller 3 Piece Kids Drum kit - by Groove Percusion
On sale for $119.99 from Sam Ash

Last year, we purchased an acoustic guitar for our then 7 year old niece. We started in the toy stores but ended up in a music store, which was a very good move. Her guitar still sounds nice and looks terrific and cost us only a fraction more than a comparable guitar from a toy store.

This past weekend, we popped into the locally owned music shop in West Chester, PA and picked up a real, full sized tambourine for our girl. This is 1 of the only 2 things she asked Santa for this year. The other, a brown boy baby doll (which she will also be getting, but not from the music store). While in the store, we spotted a flyer for a holiday kid's music "class" held there each Tuesday morning in December, exclusively for the 0-3 age set. Only $10 and the youngsters get to play with a variety of musical equipment. We will certainly be taking some vacation time and checking this out! I would be willing to bet your local music store has similar offerings...I can guarantee you that a toy store won't!

OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - Online Coupons

Maybe I am the last internet user to realize this but there are TONS of coupon codes available online. While the Mrs. and I put the finishing touches on a sizable order from Back to Basics Toys this weekend we discovered that shipping costs came to an alarming $16. On a lark, I opened another tab on my wonderful macbook and searched "back to basics toy coupons" and what to my wondering eyes should appear but a free shipping coupon from CouponCraze.com (were you expecting reindeer?)

Needless to say, I was very pleased with myself. The find qualified for a kiss on the cheek from the Mrs. for saving the family a few duckets.

Coupon Craze is only one service pulling in all these codes, some for free shipping, some for a % or $ off an order at the Lego Store, Amazon.com, Discovery Store, Disney Store, Hearth Song, eToys and many many more. Just search _______ (fill in name of store, toy or otherwise) and the word "coupon". You are bound to find hundreds of matches and several valid codes to save a couple hard earned dollar bills this holiday shopping season (or any time of year!)

OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - All I Want For Christmas is Cache

Tired of the usually holiday routine of gifts lazily lying about, waiting for a child to carelessly tear through the paper in seach of their prize? Why not try something a little different this year. Geocache the Holidays!

This one will work for those already versed in Geocaching as well as for those families looking to dive head first into this emerging hobby and lifestyle.

The idea is simple, really. Lets assume your family does not own a GPS device yet. You purchase a one (they range in price from around $80 on up to the thousands) and plan to give that as gift #1. Next "wrap" some of the other gifts as caches and place/hide them around your house, lawn, neighborhood (nothing too valuable inside, of course) and make note of the exact coordinates. Then type up, handwrite, or arrange cut-out letters from various magazines (ransom note style) each set of coordinates. You could list them all on one page or if you plan to give one large gift, you could make the caches nothing more than a progressive treasure hunt with advancing clues - filling each cache only with the next set of coordinates and a fun little hint (no real gift). Maybe you will have them come full circle, ending up back where they started, with the surprise waiting for them in the next room or garage.

Turn your holiday into a high tech game of hide and seek. The kids will surely never forget it! Then spend the days that follow registering and navigating the official Geocaching website for other "foreign" caches in your area. The lucky gift recepient will surely turn into a big geocache fan before you know it - it is contagious!

For those individuals already with Geocaching experience and equipment, consider this is an entertaining and unique way to transfer your love of the hobby to a child, friend, or other family member. Imagine the look on their faces when you hand them an envelope with nothing but coordinates inside and slap your GPS device into their palm - with an enthusiastic "Have Fun!" to send them on their merry way!

Not familiar with Geocaching? It was mentioned previously, at a high level, on OWTK. Click here for a quick primer.

OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - Give a Gift from Your Childhood

Thanks to eBay and other online trading/auction houses finding a long-lost doll, toy, video, or book that was a favorite of your own childhood is easier than ever. Giving one of these items as a gift to a child, your own or another special little person in your life, represents a special and unique method of transferring those cherished memories to a new generation.

Years back, I purchased all the original Strawberry Shortcake VHS videos and a near-mint Strawberry Shortcake doll (still with berry scented breath - even after 20+ years!) for my redheaded wife. She was ecstatic. I found all of these "antique" items on eBay. I paid a premium for them, but the look on her face that Christmas morning was well worth the expense. She still considers the doll, which I had encased in a protective wood and glass case, the best gift she has ever received.

This holiday season, why not think back to the one thing you cherised most as a child and try to hunt it down in a parent's attic or online. Chances are, someone is selling IT in good condition. These types of gifts may not be flashy, fancy, or high-tech but they mean the most and are the ones that, come February, still may carry some weight and a heightened level of importance to a child.

OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - Buy, Give and Plant (Trees as Gifts)

Cannot think of an inventive, original, and long lasting gift? Want something that is well made, will last forever if cared for, and can be equal parts educational, beautiful, fruitfull, and fun?

Give a Tree as a gift!

My parents gave our girl a baby pine tree as a gift on her first Christmas two years ago. I planted it on January 1st (during the usual winter warm spell in Southeastern Pennsylvania - it was nearly 70 degrees on New Years Day 2005!). She took to hugging it as soon as it was in the ground (tree hugging was an early habit of hers - which is why we designed this Tree Hugger shirt for her. This design started our Cafe Press store). The following year, Mrs. and lil' OWTK created a small teardrop shaped flower bed around her little tree. Each Spring we let our girl pick out colorful annuals (her choice - whatever color is her favorite that day) and she helps plant them around the tree.

This experience has turned into a wonderful yearly tradition that started as a thoughtful and unique holiday gift.

When she is a bit older, maybe next summer, we will engage in a woodworking art project to make a sign to stake into her flower bed.

OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - Kids Night on Broadway

Madame Tussauds, the famous wax museum in New York's Times Square, is sponsoring the 2007 Kids Night on Broadway on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 30th & 31st. The deal is simple, for each regular price adult ticket purchased for the these two dates, you receive a free ticket for a child age 6-18. There is no better time or way to take your children to a Broadway production. All the big shows are available with this event: The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Avenue Q, Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast, The Drowsy Chaperone...the list goes on and on.

In addition, numerous theatre district restaurants are offering a free entree for your child with the purchase of a regularly priced one. This special event just keeps getting better, as all ticket holders are invited to attend the free pre-show party at Madame Tussauds and parking is only $10 (or $15 depending on the lot) for up to 10 hours (which is insanely cheap in mid-town Manhattan). Download the parking voucher here.

Tickets for Kids Night on Broadway went on sale on Saturday, November 3rd - so do not delay...tickets for the most popular and famous shows will most likely not be around for very long.

For a parent's guide to Broadway, the shows and the theaters, visit Generation Broadway.

OWTK 2006 Holiday Gift Guide - Adopt a Baby Animal

We have seen the signs for a few weeks now: the red and green decorations and the "new" and "hot" merchandise has been on shelves since late September and the big toy catalogs and TMX Elmo emails have been arriving in our mailboxes. And while we are still far enough out that most stores have not yet pressed play on their tired collection of perky x-mas pop music, now is the time to start thinking about diverse, unique, and extraordinary Christmas/Holiday ideas.

Never ones to wait until the last minute, OWTK is already hard at work (ok, that is a bit of an exaggeration) budgeting, planning, and plotting this year's Christmas Gift Ideas for friends and family. Over the course of the next couple months, OWTK will be writing an ongoing Holiday Gift Guide for babies, toddlers, kids, and adults. The first gift idea featured is perfect for any age, and it's one that emphasizes giving over receiving.

Project Puffin's Adopt a Puffin Program
The National Audubon Society provides a unique and long lasting gift centered around Maine's gorgeous and amazing bird with it's Adopt a Puffin program.
For $100 you receive a certificate of adoption, a biography of your Puffin, and two Puffin updates throughout the year. With your donation and adoption, you are able to select a thank you gift (which could serve as the physical wrap-able gift) such as a tote bag, hat, interactive cd-rom, Puffin video, Project Puffin book, or plush Puffin (which would make a great stocking stuffer for a child!).

As an added bonus, the $100 donation (minus the value of the gift your choice) is tax deductable.
